MATCH SUMMARY:

The Falcons sadly came back to earth with a bump following their win the previous week against the Cobras when they lost at home by 30 to Windsor Warriors 2’s. A promising start saw the Falcons open up an early 5-2 lead but then last season’s top scorer, Paul Howard, had to leave the game with a gastrocnemius strain (he tweaked his calf muscle) and he had to watch from the bench as the wheels came off for the Aztecs third string. The Falcons lost the rest of the first period 5-10 and the second quarter 4-14. It was a disappointing second half which saw the Warriors pour in five three-pointers, make 9 from 11 at the free throw line and out-score their hosts 44-26.

KEY STATS:

The Falcons had seven scorers with guard Dan Sinclair leading the way once more with two three-pointers and 3 of 3 from the free throw line in his haul of 15 points. Becky Wellington made 6 of her 8 in the final period. Apart from Sinclair’s 100% effort from the line the Falcons made just one from six attempts giving them a 44% showing on the night. Debutant Mike Sharp made the most of his limited court time with a big blocked shot to eclipse the effort a few minutes earlier by Tony Upfold. Skipper Iain Rogers had his usual monster game on the boards but did pick up an injury when he took his third charge under the basket, but he returned to the fray after a brief rest on the bench.

COACH WALKER’S ASSESSMENT:

For long periods of time the Falcons played well, defended solidly and looked after the ball, however they were still guilty of some sloppy passes and lapses of concentration which invariably resulted in conceding points from quick breaks. It was very frustrating as the team moved the ball well and took a number of good shots which simply did not drop; on another night they could have easily scored well over 60 points – probably more had hot-shot Howard not hobbled off! To rub salt into the Falcons wounds the Warriors closed the game with a 13-2 spell finishing the game off with their biggest margin of the night – 30 points. Some important training sessions lie ahead (details below) which should give the squad the chance to work on some key aspects of their game.
