27/1/2019 Richard Bell Cup Final Aztec Storm 45 Aldworth Arrows 37
Match Summary
Scores by quarter: 13-9, 6-8, 14-5, 12-15
A great team performance against a really strong physical Aldworth team. The fact that everyone scored was a nice way of marking the significant contribution everyone made, but the game was won by the organisation, determination and intensity of our defending. None of the Aldworth players were able to impose themselves offensively with Caroline top scoring with only 8 points, 3 of which were on the final buzzer when the game was done.
In the first half they put in a huge defensive effort and we were a little bit tentative offensively with the result that we struggled to make enough really good chances and did not convert some of those we had. We did enough though to still be leading at half time, 19-17, but it looked it was going to be a really tight game all the way.
In the third quarter we were outstanding and totally took the game away from them. In the first five minutes we held Aldworth to just one point, causing them to commit several 24 second violations and making a number of great steals. At the offensive end the movement of ball and players was really slick and we created more clear-cut opportunities, and converted more of them. Reanna’s 6 points in that period was indicative of how we created better chances closer to the basket. We built an 11 point lead in that period and for the rest of the game managed that lead very effectively. We never let Aldworth get on a run by always scoring the next basket after they got one. With two minutes to go we were 14 points clear and the game was won and Becky finally got a well earned rest!
Many congratulations to Nynke on winning MVP, it was a great performance particularly in defence notably drawing 2 charging fouls which were indicative of both good technique and guts. However, whilst Nynke’s performance deserved recognition the officials commented on the difficulty of picking just one player because this was the epitome of a team performance. That mutual support included the encouragement from whoever was on the bench and the comments and advice in the time outs. From a coaching perspective the job was made much easier and more enjoyable. Thank you all for that.
Scorers were, Becky 18 (including an excellent 8 of 10 free shots), Reanna 8, Jade 8, Nicky 3, Laura 2, Auriol 2, Nynke 2, Amanda 2
