Week 1 Preview – Falcons tip-off against Silverbacks – Scorchers face Rocks in BBL!

Both the Wessex League and BBL get underway this weekend

In what we hope will be a weekly post, we will preview the Aztecs games taking place in the week and also look ahead at what is going down with our local BBL team, the Surrey Scorchers!

Wessex preview:

First things first, looking at Wessex fixtures this week there is only one Aztecs game this week, as the Falcons, under the ‘guidance’ of new captain, Tony ‘Thumper’ Upfold take on Yateley Silverbacks 3s at Wellington College on Tuesday evening at 7:30pm (tip-off).

With a fully fit squad of 20 players to select from, the Falcons are looking at being competitive in Wessex Open Division 3 and have a great opportunity to get the season off to a flying start against our local rivals. With Coach Walker enjoying a well-earned pre-season break in the USA (no doubt looking to recruit some more players to the Aztecs teams!), the team will be coached by Assistant Coach, Iain Rogers for this game.

Elsewhere around the leagues, in Wessex Open Division 2, Woodley Harriers face Bracknell Cobras (23rd September tip-off at 19:20).

In Wessex Open Division 3, the games tip-off with an all-Woodley battle as the Jets face the Greenflash (Sunday at 17:20), Slough Scorpions II face Wolfpack Mohegans (Wednesday at 20:15). Bracknell Cobras II face a long drive down the M4 to a new team in the Wessex League, Swindon Shock 2 (Thursday at 20:15) and the week of fixtures rounds off with the Woking Blackhawk Thunder B facing Windsor Warriors 2 on Friday at 19:45.

In the ladies divisions, in Division 1 there is only one game as the Woking Blackhawk Ladies tip-off their season against Aldworth Arrows (Wednesday at 20:15). There are no games scheduled in Ladies Division 2 this week.

BBL Watch – Surrey Scorchers

In the BBL this weekend, the Surrey Scorchers, under the guidance of Head Coach and recent guest coach at the Aztecs pre-season training session, Creon Raftopolous get their season underway in the British Basketball League against the team north of the border, the Glasgow Rocks.

The Rocks opened their league campaign with a heavy loss against the London Lions in the capital on Friday night and Creon and the team which features a number of key returnees including young GB player, Josh Steele who had an impressive first season in the black and blue of Scorchers last season, will be looking to continue their impressive winning streak from last season.

Their game tips-off at 7:00pm tonight (Saturday 22nd September) at the Surrey Sports Park in Guildford. Tickets are available online and on the door
